What to Expect With an Au Pair From Colombia
As most Latin American countries, Colombians can be described as outgoing, warm-hearted, and sociable people. A Colombian au pair is likely to be flexible on schedule, and will look forward to being a part of the family. A Colombian au pair will usually communicate easily about how she feels.
Colombian couples have on average three children, but have many relatives living nearby. Family is at the center of one's life in Colombia, and get-togethers, family reunions and meals are very common. Colombian children love their family so much that in fact, they tend to move out of their parents' home rather late; they often only settle on their own when they get married.
You can expect your live-in nanny from Colombia to have gained a lot of child care experience through babysitting cousins, nieces, and nephews. It's not very common in Colombia to use a day cares and parents rely heavily on relatives to care of their children.
In Colombia approximately 40% of households own a car. As can be expected, a Colombian au pair is likely to have little driving experience. Some Colombian au pairs take their driver's license as part of their au pair application. It is always recommended that you discuss your driving needs with your au pair.
Colombian students are required to learn English from elementary school through high school. The curriculum of English classes focuses more on writing than speaking so you can expect your au pair to be better at writing and reading than listening and speaking. A good idea would be to put in writing your house's rules and your au pair's schedule, at least in the early stages of the program year, to ensure all is understood.

Child Care Experience
I worked at a preschool from July to December 2017 taking care of children ages 2 to 5 years old. I supervised their groupwork, did arts and crafts with them, supervised snack time and accompanied them to the bathroom. I worked at another preschool from September to November 2019 taking care of children ages 2 to 5 years old. I assisted the teacher with various activities. From February to July 2022, I was an assistant at a preschool taking care of children ages 2 to 5 years old. From August to October 2022, I worked at a preschool taking care of children ages 2 to 5 years old doing creative activities with them and assisting the teacher. Finally, I babysat Mariham (10mths) and Isabella (1) from February to December 2024. I did fun activities with them, helped their motor development, spent time outdoors, played and explored nature.

I babysat Laura (8) form March 2024 to February 2025. I was responsible for picking up Juliana, taking her to school, making sure she was fed, picking her up after school, supervising her homework, and doing recreational activities like going to the park, reading, singing, and playing with her. I babysat Nicolas (1) from June 2023 to February 2024. My responsibilities included ensuring his feeding, changing his diaper, giving him the bottle, supervising his rest, playing with him, singing lullabies, and taking him to the park. I babysat Isa (6) and Juan (8) from May to October 2022. I helped them get ready for school, dropped them off and picked them up from school, helped with homework, prepared meals did fun activities and took them to the park, the mall or the movies. Lastly, I helped out at my church's Sunday school taking care of children ages 5 to 13 years old. We did arts and crafts, played games, and talked about the bible.

I would change her diaper, prepare her food, feed her, paint, draw, play with her, pick up toys, sometimes I put on children's programs to entertain her, organize the kitchen and put her to bed to fall asleep. I was responsible for changing his diapers, preparing his food, feeding him and picking up his toys, organizing the kitchen, bathing him, dressing him and playing children's programs. From 02/2022 to 12/2022 I worked at a daycare center for children ages 9 months to 5 on a weekly basis. I was responsible for feeding, changing diapers, preparing bottles for the little ones, organizing the children's spaces and the kitchen, playing with them and participating in fun and learning activities for them.

I have always had a deep interest in American culture and in learning new ways of living and working. First of all, becoming an au pair exchange program participant in the USA is the opportunity to keep on working with children since that is what I like the most. Also, because I want to improve my English oral skills, visit new places, learn about a new culture and share my own with my host family. Secondly, I consider I am responsible, independent, attentive, honest, empathic, hardworking and lovely. All those personaly traits are bland skills I can use for taking care of the children and making of this experience the best one ever. Furthermore, all my knowledge and the experience working with children as a nurse assistant is the most valuable strength I have for assiting the children in any urgency or emergency. Also, I know how to give First Aid Assistance in any unexpected situation.

From January to June 2024, I cared for Mia (7). I played with her, we went out to the park to eat ice cream, I helped her with homework, I did her hair, I dressed her, I gave her lunch and breakfast. From August to October 2023, I also care for Sarwin (1 month). played him, dressed him, changed his diapers, out him to sleep, played with him, I bathed him, gave him his teapot. I cared for Abraham (1) from April 2023 to June 2023. I prepared his breakfast, head his lunch up, gave a bathed to him, after bathing him I put him to sleep, changed his diapers also played with him, we watched animated movies, listened to children songs. Additionally, from December 2022 to February 2023, I cared for Geiner (10). I prepared breakfast and lunch, helped him with homework, I taught him basic topics, took him to the park to played taught, also teach made the bed, them and paint and draw we went for a walk with the dogs. I also took care of Darwin Carretero for one month from 08/2023 to 10/2023, and again from 12/2024 to 01/2025, working Monday to Friday for 5 hours a day and 3 days a week for 5 hours per day, during which I played with him, dressed him, changed his diapers, took him for walks, put him down for naps, played with him, gave him baths, and fed him his bottle.

It makes me happy to teach them new and fun things, help them discover and explore new environments, and experience different feelings. My experience with children has taught me how important it is to make them happy with simple things.
